The Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, the Hon. Floyd Green, recently bemoaned the fact that of the two thousand five hundred registered early childhood institutions in Jamaica, only eighteen have met the required standards and it was only last year that the first set of schools began achieving certification.

To compound the situation, the Minister of Education, the Hon. Ruel Reid, is calling for these institutions to simplify basic school teaching to focus more on developing cognitive and physical capabilities instead of getting the child to learn everything.

We all know the financial challenges faced by early childhood institutions in Jamaica, which must be eventually rectified based on the fact that this is the most important period of a child’s life, to the extent where his/her character is established by the age of five, which lasts a lifetime, so we can and must do better.
