As We See It >>

Readers will remember in the 1980s, when the 807 programme was the flavour of the month, when thousands of jobs were temporarily created across the country, as mainly US garment manufacturing companies took advantage of Jamaica’s geographical location and cheap labour to assemble various types of clothing for immediate export, where are they now?

That expansive building in Williamsfield, Manchester, was once used for garment manufacturing and laid idle for decades after the foreign operators packed up their sewing machines and left overnight for greener pastures, so how were these entities similar to the current Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) expansion?

Well, the foreign 807 operators did not put up one building in Jamaica, which is similar to the current BPO operations in the country, so with President Trump flexing his muscles, it is likely that it could be deja-vue once again in Jamaica.  We cannot build a country like this.
